Ecology Cell Operational Specifications
Source: Ecology Cell water treatment cell from RSI (502) 376-0452
Function: Ecology Cell program controls scale, corrosion and bacteria in any system using water for a heat transfer when applied properly. (cooling towers, chillers, boilers, closed loops, etc.)
Sizing: One 36" cell shall be provided for each 100 gallons per minute of recirculated cooling water, or each 75 horsepower in a boiler. RSI shall determine the exact number of cells required per system.
Maintenance: A person trained to RSI standards shall clean the Ecology Cells on an as needed basis and test the system water on a frequent, typically monthly, basis. Cleaning shall include the Ecology Cells and the supporting racks. Silver cells should be cleaned thoroughly, taking precaution not to damage the silver finish. Water tests shall be performed and written in a log book. Depending on water quality and operating parameters of cooling towers and boilers, return service visits typically fall between a 25 to 45 day window. Some systems, such as closed loops, may only require service every six months. The water tests shall include 1) conductivity 2) pH 3) dissolved iron. A system review shall be provided to the customer.
The cleaning duties include:
Clean Ecology Cells and racks thoroughly.
Check system bleed/blowdown for proper operation.
Check for Algae. Shock, chlorine or bromine floater, or a non chemical treatment agreed to by customer, as needed.
Check for mud/silt buildup around cells. Maintenance contractor shall clean the mud/silt buildup from system if buildup is within 1" of the cells.
Verbal and written report to customer, maintenance contractor, etc.
Electrical Ground: The customer/maintenance contractor shall be responsible for checking the electrical ground connections on all drive motors coming in contact with the water, including all fan and pump motors. A "WYE" is acceptable. A "DELTA" (3 wires or a multiple of 3 wires) is not acceptable. A "DELTA" ground will induce a small current through the water that will lessen the effect of the Ecology Cells. With a "DELTA" ground, a separate 6 gauge or larger solid copper wire must be installed from the motor mount(s) to a grounding rod in accordance with the local electrical code.
